Written and fact-checked by the PsychMentalHealth editorial team. Read our editorial policy.
Call 911 if anyone is in immediate danger. For thoughts of suicide or any mental health crisis, call 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, free and open 24/7. For a hospital crisis evaluation when no one is in immediate danger, the closest service on the state's list is Raritan Bay Medical Center's, 732-324-5289. Our crisis page has the rest.
In Sayreville, a mental health call to the police can end with a follow-up from a social worker who works inside the police department. That program is one of the few mental health services we could find that is run from inside the borough itself. For hospital and clinic care, Sayreville residents make short drives: to two Hackensack Meridian hospitals with round-the-clock psychiatric emergency care, one in Perth Amboy and one in Old Bridge, and to an outpatient office near the Old Bridge hospital that sees children as young as 8. We could not confirm a hospital, a community mental health center or a community health center with a Sayreville address on any operator's own website. Private therapists do practice in the borough, and our guide to finding a therapist explains how to check a license and ask about fees.
If your address says Parlin, or you live in Morgan, everything below applies to you as well.
Quick answer: Call 911 if anyone is in immediate danger. For thoughts of suicide or any mental health crisis, call 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, free and open 24/7. Which number fits the situation?
| Situation | Who to call | Number | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immediate danger: an overdose, a weapon, someone who cannot be kept safe for the next hour | Emergency services | 911 | |
| You or someone else needs to talk to a person now | 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline | 988 | Free and open 24/7. |
| Someone may be a danger to themselves or others but is not in immediate danger, and you think they may need a hospital evaluation | Affiliated Emergency Service at Raritan Bay Medical Center, 530 New Brunswick Avenue, Perth Amboy | 732-324-5289 | The closer of Middlesex County's two screening services. |
| The same situation, for an adult | Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care, 671 Hoes Lane, Piscataway | 732-235-5700 | Rutgers describes its screening service as available to adults. |
| A child or teen in crisis | PerformCare | 1-877-652-7624 | For anything life-threatening, PerformCare says to dial 911. Otherwise, follow the menu prompts for an urgent situation. Mobile response runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and a team may come to your home within one hour of notification. If PerformCare decides your child should be evaluated for hospitalization, it refers you to a local screening center. |
Both screening services are on the state's list, updated October 8, 2026.
Which hospitals handle psychiatric emergencies near Sayreville?
Hackensack Meridian Health runs Carrier Behavioral Health on the third floor of Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy. Hackensack Meridian says its emergency crisis stabilization service runs 24 hours a day in two places: the emergency department at Raritan Bay and the emergency department at Old Bridge Medical Center. Crisis counselors and psychiatric nurses evaluate adults and children having a psychiatric emergency, recommend treatment, and refer them to the right level of care.
Raritan Bay also has an inpatient adult psychiatric unit, a dual-diagnosis program for people with both a mental health condition and a substance use disorder, and a geriatric inpatient program. The Carrier page does not list outpatient therapy. Our Perth Amboy guide covers what the Raritan Bay unit does in more detail, including its phone lines. Our Old Bridge guide covers Old Bridge Medical Center and the outpatient office beside it.
Both emergency departments handle crises. Neither one books weekly therapy. For that, you call an outpatient clinic yourself.
Where can Sayreville residents get weekly therapy?
Bay Behavioral Health Outpatient Services, Hackensack Meridian's outpatient office near Old Bridge Medical Center, lists individual, group and intensive outpatient services for children age 8 and up, adolescents and adults. Call 732-360-4077. Its location, hours and services are in our Old Bridge guide. Its page does not list which insurance plans it takes, so ask on the first call.
Central Jersey Medical Center, 275 Hobart Street, Perth Amboy, is a federally qualified health center. It lists on-site behavioral health care for anxiety, depression, PTSD and trauma, grief, substance use disorder and self-esteem issues, with in-office and virtual appointments. Call 732-376-9333. It offers a sliding fee discount program based on income and family size, so if cost is what stops you, ask where you fall on it. The Perth Amboy guide has more on this clinic.
Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care runs outpatient clinics elsewhere in the county through a single access line. Our Middlesex County resource page lists that line along with a university training clinic in Piscataway that offers low-cost care to some clients. If you are still sorting out whether you need a therapist, a psychiatrist or something more structured, read levels of mental health care explained.
The borough's police social worker program
The Sayreville Police Department's 2025 annual report describes a program called P.U.L.S.S.E., short for Proactive Union of Law Enforcement and Social Service Experts. Officers who come into contact with someone showing signs of mental health or addiction problems refer that person to a social worker within the department. The social worker reaches out, assesses what the person needs, links them to services such as mental health counseling, addiction treatment or housing support, and follows up afterward.
The report does not give a separate phone number for the program. It begins with a police contact, not a call you place to a clinic. So if a family member had a run-in with Sayreville police while they were struggling, and a social worker calls afterward, that call is part of the program. Answer it.
When drinking or drugs are part of it
The same police report gives the local numbers. Its 2025 figures list 21 overdoses, 8 overdose deaths and 30 administrations of naloxone (Narcan). If someone has overdosed, call 911 first.
For help with alcohol or drug use, call ReachNJ at 1-844-732-2465, New Jersey's 24/7 addiction helpline. The state says a live person answers within the first 30 seconds and that staff screen callers, refer them to support services and connect them to a local treatment provider. It serves residents of any age, whatever their insurance or ability to pay. Raritan Bay's dual-diagnosis unit, above, is for a hospital stay, not for a first step.
Students at Sayreville War Memorial High School
The high school's counseling department lists a Student Assistance Counselor among its staff. The department's main line is 732-525-5280. If you are a parent, start with that office. The counselor is already in the building with your teenager.
The crisis list on the high school's counseling page does not include 988. It still shows older numbers in its place, including the NJ Hopeline and the old National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number. For a teenager in crisis, use 988 or PerformCare at 1-877-652-7624. More on getting a young person evaluated is in our guide to child and teen mental health help in NJ.
Older adults, and the trip itself
Every clinic in this guide is outside the borough, so for someone who does not drive, the ride to Old Bridge or Perth Amboy is the first problem to solve. The borough's Office on Aging, 423 Main Street, open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., lists two options on its page: the "Around the Town" bus service at 732-390-7058, and Middlesex County Area Transit (MCAT) at 1-800-221-3520. Ask about either before you book a first appointment.
If transportation cannot be solved, ask the clinic whether the first visit can be by video. Central Jersey Medical Center says virtual appointments are available, and our guide to online therapy in NJ explains how telehealth works for mental health care.
Book with two clinics, keep the sooner one
If your coverage is NJ FamilyCare, read our NJ FamilyCare mental health guide before you call. If you have no insurance, read therapy without insurance in NJ.
You do not have to accept the first intake date you are offered. On the same day, call Bay Behavioral Health at 732-360-4077 and Central Jersey Medical Center at 732-376-9333. Ask each whether it takes your insurance, when its first available intake is, and whether a video visit would come sooner. Keep whichever is earlier and cancel the other, so the slot goes to someone else.
Having an intake on the calendar does not mean you have to wait for it if things get worse. Call 911 if anyone is in immediate danger. Otherwise, call or text 988, or call Raritan Bay's screening service at 732-324-5289 if a hospital evaluation may be needed.
